Nothing to see. Really? No way!

Instead of driving through, just get off!

“In Thuringia there’s nothing going on. What should we do on vacation there? We’ll just drive through and stop at most stop for a pee break.” That’s what you think? We Thuringians are polite people, so we respect your opinion. And who are we to convince you otherwise? But don’t come later complaining that nobody told you.
Told you WHAT?

Well, for example, about the roughly 400 castles and palaces. Quite a lot going on there! From the ancient ruins of Mühlburg, where the Thuringian kings might have resided 1,500 years ago, to the mythical Wartburg with all its stories, and Leuchtenburg with its “Skywalk of Wishes.” How that works? Well… ah, but you didn’t want to know, so we’ll leave it at that.

Gotha is quite boring too, of course. They only have the largest early Baroque palace ensemble in Germany. In the ballroom of Friedenstein Palace, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert once danced. Their ancestor, Duke Ernst the Pious, delighted royal courts across Europe with his descendants. But that’s probably a story you don’t care about either.

Completely uninteresting is also Weimar, with its palaces and parks, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, poets’ residences, and Bauhaus heritage. Lots of this UNESCO-listed. Who wants that? Not to mention Eisenach, birthplace of some musician by the name of Johann Sebastian Bach or the like. And some guy named Luther did stuff there too. Who cares?

Then there are Jena, Mühlhausen, Arnstadt, Schmalkalden, Meiningen… What? What’s that? You’d rather have peace and quiet in nature?

Sorry, that’s not an option here. Our forests are full of action. You’ll just have to cope with birdsong and rustling leaves. There might also be a babbling mountain stream, or bees’ humming in a meadow. Because of the flowers there. Sorry. At least you won’t have to talk to many people while hiking or cycling. You’re often alone with nature. Can’t have it all.

Unfortunately, our nature parks, biosphere reserves, and the Hainich National Park may provide sort of entertainment en route. Too bad! Be warned of treetop paths, wildcat enclosures, climbing parks, and border museums along the Green Belt – not to mention the views.

Okay, now you know. Do something about it. For the incorrigibles among you: Off you go to Thuringia!
