Visual language

A visual language doesn’t simply mean the written word. Take the Cranach family, for example, not just Lucas Cranach the Elder and the Younger, but the entire Cranach workshop. Lucas Cranach the Elder was instrumental in promoting the leading lights of the Reformation, such as Martin Luther, and embellished their writings with his illustrations. His paintings came to epitomise the Reformation. He was, so to speak, its PR department.

Cranach’s paintings in Thuringia still resonate with audiences today, engaging them in a lively dialogue of colour and symbolism, and creating a world of new meanings through the language of art.

Thuringia is home to many visual delights – here are a few glimpses.
