Thuringia says “Hei”
Norwegian idyll
The Thuringian Sea
We have an affectionate nickname for this special region: the Thuringian Sea. In actual fact, viewed from a distance, the huge expanse of water framed by deep forests looks like a Scandinavian fjord landscape. The region is Europe’s largest contiguous reservoir area. This charming landscape has the gentle meanders of the River Saale to thank.
The Saale Cycle Trail - sometimes wild, sometimes dreamy
Tip: You can also explore the area on foot via the Hohenwarte Stausee Path ... or on water under your own steam in a rowing boat ... or as a guest on a ship that guides you through the Saale cascades.
Sternenpark Rhön
Staying outside on a clear starry night and allowing the dark to unfold is particularly worth it in the Rhön. Because the area is sparsely populated, it’s dark enough here at night to easily see the stars, planets and the Milky Way. If you’re very lucky, you might even get to spot the northern lights.

Zeulenrodaer Sea
The Zeulenroda reservoir lies in the Vogtland, nestled in a picturesque landscape. We affectionately dub it the Zeulenrodaer Sea. The reservoir is surrounded by gently rolling hills and forests.
Tip: Enjoy the peace and quiet of nature on the Talsperrenweg Zeulenroda trail. The hiking trail will also take you to the Weida reservoir. For an easy loop route with the family, we recommend the Promenade path. Or a Nordic walking route through the wild, romantic Weidatal valley.
