Posterstein Castle

People in Altenburger Land have long been familiar with Posterstein. How about taking a look at what they like so much about it? Is it the salon stories? The attractive, small castle complex with a circular keep? There is a little historical surprise lurking behind every corner. Or is it the many offers for children? Dare to find out.

Of course, you can also visit any other castle in Thuringia. We have enough of them. But this one is a real insider’s tip.

How does a knight pee in armour?

Excuse me, I am Posti. The castle ghost since 1679. And this is my friend Stone, the castle dragon. We are both waiting for you at Posterstein Castle to answer important questions such as this one. Or why are the Middle Ages called “Middle Ages”? And did knights actually have toilet paper? Admit it: you have wondered about that.

The children’s castle is not like the other castles. Children have helped to shape the exhibition. It is their questions that we answer here. The children can also scamper through the corridors dressed as a castle lady or a squire. Equipped with a treasure map, they look for secrets and explanations for mysterious proceedings. Why, for example, does a suit of armour stomp through the castle on its own at night? You can also ask us your questions in advance by email. Or take a look at some answers on the castle’s blog

Salons instead of social media

How networking worked in the 18th and 19th centuries is a question that is probably of more interest to the grown ups. At Posterstein, you will come closer to the answer. Instead of Facebook and Instagram, people made use of cultural encounters at so-called “salons”. Noble ladies surrounded themselves with a circle of educated gentlemen such as writers, scientists or politicians. Sometimes these gatherings gave birth to new ideas. This was also the case in Altenburger Land. At Posterstein, you will find out how such salon networking contributed towards the creation of Altenburg’s Lindenau Museum or the invention of the game of skat. The lady at the centre of the salon here was the beautiful, intelligent and very rich Duchess of Courland. Her network extended across the whole of Europe and even included the Russian Tsar Alexander I. And all of that without Facebook!

There is always something going on at Posterstein: special events, knightly spectacles, children’s activities in the holidays – it is worth a visit!
